Roy McBain 3-2 Caley
By: Ian Rose | January 24th, 2009That was ridiculous. I could say that about so many things in this long, dark Caley season, but this may be the strangest and saddest result of all, because it was avoidable. Roy McBain, who has certainly had his positive moments in a Caley shirt, just completely lost it today. How’s this for a trifecta?:
39′ : Concedes own goal, making the match 1-0 to Hearts
70′ : Concedes penalty. (Esson saves)
72′ : Sent off, for verbally abusing the opponents, the pitch, the ball, and anything else in his line of sight.
Oddly enough, that was when the match got interesting. When Roy was sent off, it was 1-1, and our best hope was to survive it and keep the point. With St. Mirren ahead and Falkirk tied at that point, we were about to lose points to both. Then on 79 minutes, David Obua (who helped Roy in with Hearts’ first score) headed in another, and we figure it’s over at 2-1. No. This game hadn’t finished playing with the emotions of Caley Thistle fans, not by a long shot. Speaking of long shot, Dougie Imrie took his and buried it in the 88th, from just outside the penalty area. And the fans rejoiced. For about 45 seconds. That was about the span of time it took Hearts to erase Imrie’s goal and bury us once again at the bottom of the table, alone.
Dundee United did end up coming back and beating St. Mirren, but Falkirk held on for a vital point against the Well, and that leaves us alone by two points at the bottom now. If we lose a full match to Falkirk, and go 5 down, we may not ever see sunlight again this season.
We’ll take that new manager now, thanks.
