Relegation Watch, Week 20: And then there were three
By: Ian Rose | December 27th, 2008Not that I think Motherwell is safe, but they gave themselves a bit of breathing room today by beating Caley 3-2 at Fir Park. The bottom four at 17 points have slimmed down to just three – us, Falkirk, and Hamilton. With both of the others losing, also by a single goal, we maintain our five-goal lead over Hamilton for survival.
In order to crush the small part of my heart that isn’t already clenched over the possibility of a return to lower-division football, my favorite Caley Thistle player, Ian Black, has all but announced his departure at the end of the season. And where’s he going? That sound you hear is the knife twisting – he’s going to Hearts. If it had to be the capital, why couldn’t it be Hibs?
Elsewhere in the league, St. Mirren made it even clearer that they won’t be in the hunt for the drop with their fourth straight win, 1-0 over Hamilton. Falkirk went down 1-0 to Dundee United, who tightened their hold on third place as Hearts lost to Aberdeen. Four on the trot also for Aberdeen – good on them (now all they need is their blogger to come back).
And in that other match, Celtic took one giant leap toward their fourth straight league title with a 1-0 win at Ibrox. It’s Rangers’ first loss at home this season, and puts the Hoops ahead by seven points.
