Reality Check: Caley 0-1 Hamilton
By: Ian Rose | August 17th, 2008Yesterday morning saw Caley fans dreaming of their first 2-0 start in the top flight, but by afternoon, we were brought back to Earth by newly promoted Hamilton, who took that honor for themselves instead.
The lone goal came from English striker Richard Offiong with the last kick of the first half, and getting back into it was hard going for the Highland boys. Don Cowie had a great chance, a chance he would have buried during last season’s great scoring form, but he is yet to find that form in this campaign, and he missed badly. The Hamilton defense, though guilty of a bit of time-wasting, did its part and held us scoreless.
As much as I hate to watch my Caley lose, I have to say I’m quite impressed with this Hamilton side. After the woe that was Gretna last season, it’s nice to see a newly promoted team doing well. Whether they will hold on as the season goes on - that will remain to be seen - but so far, so good for former Accies player Billy Reid in his first season as a top-flight manager. He certainly earned his PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award last season, and he’s looking great for SPL Manager of the Month for August.
I’ll be on later this week with a bit more analysis. My internet situation is still not fully resolved after my recent move, and so I’m depending on the local coffee shop right now on the weekends.
As the season goes on, I’ll be keeping track of how we are faring vs. past seasons. Even though this weekend was less than perfect, after last season’s awful start, there are a lot of things to be happy about.
So far:
2 matches played: 3 points, 2 goals for, 1 goal against
Last season after 2 matches: 0 points, 1 goal for, 5 goals against

Hey Ian, five players have withdrawn from Scotland’s squad for this Wednesday’s friendly against N. Ireland. Any possibility of seeing a Highlander being named as a replacement?

I very much doubt it. We don’t really have anyone right now with a threat of breaking into the NT that I can see, even with the continuation of the long sad tradition of NT withdrawals. I love Butcher’s quote: “We only have five this time, usually it’s eight or nine.” True enough. Anyway, short answer: no.

The way I see it, if Kenny Miller can be named to the squad, then so can Don Cowie.

I’m with you - I love Cowie to death - but I just don’t see it happening anytime soon. Someone has to really shine in Inverness to get that attention. If Cowie does what he did last season again, maybe.
