Iain Vigurs is the hero as we squeak by Arbroath
By: Ian Rose | August 27th, 2008Well, that was entirely too close. 2-2 at the end of regulation. 2-2 at the end of extra time. This is not a side with a long, illustrious history of penalty success, and so going into the spot kicks at the end of today’s second round League Cup match in Angus against Arbroath, we had reason to be nervous, but just as he had done in regulation, Iain Vigurs was the man for us when it mattered.
In the 18th minute, the former Elgin City midfielder showed why he is so admired by Craig Brewster as he opened the scoring in what should have been the first of several for Caley. But instead, Arbroath hit back just a few minutes later, and we went into the half drawn at one. In the second half, it was Garry Wood getting on the board to make it 2-1, where it would have ended if not for a late penalty for the Lichties that tied it all up. That brought us to extra time, and to the aforementioned spot kicks. Vigurs booted home the last one to win the shootout 4-2.
A nervous day for Caley fans, as we go close to out of what should have been an easier win. Still, any landing you walk away from, and we barely walk away from this one. Mon the Caley.
