Elgin 1-3 Caley : First SFL friendly goes well
By: Ian Rose | July 14th, 2009Caley Thistle still didn’t travel all that far for today’s friendly, but at least we faced a slightly more challenging opponent in Third Division Elgin City. It was a day for the trialists, with 4 starting and more on the bench, and from all accounts, we got a pretty good look at some of the new lads. The consensus Man of the Match goes to Robert Eagles, who scored once and looks like he might be the replacement for Filipe Morais that we have so desperately wanted. Richie Foran continued his fine form, breaking his goal streak but only because he passed up an empty net to set up Andy Barrowman and that’s as good as a goal in my book. Even Adam Rooney got on the board, despite his best efforts, as the Irishman’s penalty kick knocked off the post and in.
Less impressive, it seems, was trialing center back Narius Bulvitis. We might not be facing Old Firm strikers this season, but if there’s any position that you build a team around, it’s the two men in central defense. Everyone has bad matches, but unless Bulvitis shows more soon, he won’t have many.
Greg Kelly got his first start in goal, and should provide some pressure on Ryan Esson, though Esson will remain our clear #1 for now. The big story is Eagles, who impressed everyone on the day and really controlled the match the way we need an attack-minded midfielder to do. Great to have him on board for the drive back to the SPL.
Mon the Caley.
