Can We Play You Every Week? Caley 2-1 Killie

By: Ian Rose | March 14th, 2009

Not to rub it in, but when 3 of a team’s 8 wins, and 9 of its 28 points, come from a single opponent, it merits some recognition. We’ve played Kilmarnock 4 times already this season, thrice in the league and once in the Scottish Cup, and it’s been all Caley so far. 4 wins.

Getting the goals early for the Caley were Richie Foran and the hero of Ibrox, Ian Black.

That leaves us four points above Falkirk, who still have a game in hand, but as previously mentioned in this blog, have a touch rougher of a schedule than us going into the split. And all the momentum, despite Falkirk throwing us out of two cup competitions this season, is with us. I’m beginning to believe we’ll stay up.

Almost as important as gaining points on an idle Falkirk are the points we made up on some of those just slightly above us on the table. Hamilton has lived and died this season on the 1-0, and they went down by that scoreline today, leaving us only four points behind them. St. Mirren was idle, and face the Accies next weekend. The loser of that match, if there is one, is still very much in the frame for relegation, as both St. Mirren and Killie sit just one point above us, at 29.

A good day overall (with the bonus of Liverpool beating Man United, which despite my general neutrality south of the border, made me smile). Happy Pi Day everyone, and mon the Caley Thistle.

If there’s ever a squad that represents the parity of the SPL, it’s Killie. At the beginning of the season they beat Hibs, Dundee United, Aberdeen, and Hearts and seemed to be poised to fight for the final European spot. Now they are fighting off relegation. What a wacky league.
