Pressley to Caley?
By: Ian Rose | January 2nd, 2009Well, it’s January, and with the New Year comes the scramble for teams at the bottom of European leagues (read: Us) to go looking about for the players that will help them stay alive. Caley’s first real offer has been to a player that I once was quite fond of, but who might be just a peek over the hill now. Steven Pressley, 32-cap Scotland defender and current national team assistant coach, has been offered a contract (hopefully a rather short one) at Inverness. I have mixed feelings on this – on one hand, with faith in Craig Brewster waning both in the press and among the fans (and likely in the locker room), a strong leader like Pressley could make a real difference. He’s also an Elgin native, and a local boy who did the region very proud in his national team days. On the other hand, is a 35-year-old defender really the answer? At this point, any move we can make with our limited funds is going to be a gamble, and though I voted to take the potential-over-experience gamble in last year’s national elections, I suppose I’m okay with the opposite here. If he comes, I for one will welcome him, but I’d like to see a move for a bit more forward of a player. After all, our biggest problem this season (Ibrox debacle aside) hasn’t been conceding goals – it’s been scoring them.
More soon on how this develops.
