Our remaining fixtures, and Falkirk’s
By: Ian Rose | March 4th, 2009As I mentioned earlier, in my brief and joyful match post, the Caley Thistle defeated Rangers at Ibrox, 1-0 on the strength of a late Ian Black penalty. In doing so, we jumped out of the SPL’s single relegation spot, and now sit in 11th, one point above Falkirk. There are ten matches left in the season, five until the split, then five after it. For the uninitiated, the SPL split is perhaps the oddest scheduling mechanism in world sport. After 33 matches, the SPL splits in half, and the top six play each other, and likewise for the bottom six, bringing us to the traditional total of 38 matches.
Falkirk and Caley are certainly both going to meet the split on the bottom half. So the question is, what are the schedules up to that point? The answer is that they are very different, and very much in our favor. Here they are:
Our five
Home vs. Kilmarnock, Away vs. Falkirk, Home vs. St. Mirren, Away vs. Aberdeen, Home vs. Hamilton
Their five
Home vs. Caley, Home vs. Rangers, Away vs. Celtic, Away vs. Kilmarnock, Home vs. Hearts
That’s right. Their last five matches include meetings with #1 Celtic, #2 Rangers, and #3 Hearts, while ours include only one top-half opponent.
You have to like our chances, especially given that the momentum is all with the Caley.
