Caley win first competitive match of the season

I’m not sure which is more satisfying to write – “Caley win” or “competitive match”. It seems like a long time ago when I last had a meaningful result to report from Caley Thistle. It was a more innocent time – Italy were world champions, Raul and Guti still played for Real Madrid. Good times. Good times.

But enough of the memories. It’s time for the here and now, and today that means Caley’s comprehensive 3-0 win over Queens Park in the first round of the league cup. Lee Cox opened the scoring, and had the only first half goal, but in the second, Eric Odhiambo and Caley legend Ross Tokely added two more to complete the victory.

Not a whole lot to say about this one, to be honest. We were at home, against lower-division foes, and we did what we had to do. I’m always happier with a win than not, but the gulf between Queens Park and opening day opponents Celtic cannot be underestimated. There’s a lot of work between us and SPL survival, and it hasn’t started yet. We have 38 matches to prove that the pride of the Highlands belong in the SPL. Great to see a few players get their first goals of the season – I have high hopes for Odhiambo this year. Although the first objective this season, the one that matters more than all the others combined, is survival in the top flight, I’d like to see this team make a cup semifinal this season, and I think they’re capable of that. This is one step closer.

Welcome back, Caley. Here’s to a great season.
