Caley 5-0 Liverpool … you heard me.
By: Ian Rose | August 19th, 2008I know it doesn’t count. I know it was the reserves. And yes, I know that visiting teams aren’t exactly encouraged to push hard in a testimonial match. Still, don’t take away from me the sheer enjoyment of staring at that scoreline. 7,352 lucky souls (a great showing for a meaningless match at little Caledonian Stadium) got a great show last night, as Roy McBain, Garry Wood, Rory McAllister and David Proctor all scored for the Caley in a rout of Liverpool’s far-from-starting eleven. Not content to let us sit on our laurels, Reds center back Mikel San Jose gifted us an own-goal as well.
The only thing that could make it sweeter … well, aside from getting a result like this in a league match … would be if Barry Wilson could have netted one. It was his testimonial, after all, and the 36-year-old Caley legend got as good a party as he could have hoped for. But old legs are old legs, and he once again hinted after the match that even if he wins an extension to his contract, getting him to the end of his 10th season in Inverness, it will almost certainly be his last.
We love ya, Barry. As for the rest of the boys, I hope you had a fun run out and didn’t pull anything. Time to get ready for Hibs on Saturday.
